So when our culture started taking synthetic medicines and wanting quick fixes, that really became the alternative medicine over what had taken place for years!
Massage is one of those ancient forms of health maintenance. There are numerous types of massage and bodywork; various techniques utilize different strokes, but they all work to enhance body functions so your body can do what it was designed to do; heal when given the right tools to do that.
Your session may start with broad, flowing strokes which will help to calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension. As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to work on specific areas of tension. Communicate immediately if there is discomfort so another approach may be taken. Most people feel very relaxed. Some experience freedom from long-term aches and pains. Massage improves circulation, increases joint mobility, reduces mental and physical fatigue and stress, promotes fast healing of injured muscular tissue and can reduce blood pressure. The average full-body massage session usually takes one hour. If shorter, it is for specific problem area.
Other benefits most experience are better sleep, improved concentration, reduced anxiety and an overall sense of well-being.
What Should You Expect?
Breathe. Deep breathing during the massage helps focus your mind and relaxes you all at the same time.
Visualize. As tight areas are being worked on visualize release.
Let Go. Let the therapist do the work, they will lift your head, arm etc. Don’t hang on, let go!
Stop Thinking, Start Being. You think all day long, Massage is a great way to just focus on what relaxation feels like…not stress!
Emotions. Memories and feelings are buried in your body and it’s natural that they emerge
when you are touched with care, compassion and gentleness. Relax, breathe and allow your
tears or laughter to flow.
Blissing out is OK. Sometimes massage makes you feel ecstatic, like you’re floating. Enjoy.
Clothing Optional. If you’re uncomfortable only having a sheet on, underwear is optional. We respect your comfort level.
You’re the Boss. Just because you’re lying down doesn’t mean you have to be submissive. Don’t like the music? Want the room cooler/warmer or the pressure deeper? You’re in charge!
Be Grateful. During your massage, be grateful for what you’re experiencing in the moment. Afterwards, share that with the therapist and others who can benefit from a great massage too!
What Should You Do Afterward?
- Drink lots of water so your body can excrete the metabolic wastes moved out of tissues during the massage
- Go for a short 15 minute stroll
- Soak in very warm bath water with 2¢ Epsom Salt. It helps detoxify and offers magnesium to your muscles.
- Eat light, healthy meals and sleep soundly tonight!
